Claritin
DESCRIPTION

Claritin is a brand name for the antihistamine medication loratadine, which alleviates symptoms of allergic reactions.

How It Works

The active ingredient in Claritin is loratadine, which is known as a second generation antihistamine. This drug can reduce a substance produced by the body called histamines. It is the histamines that cause the body to sneeze, cough, or get inflamed when in contact with certain foreign substances. Histamines are the driving force of allergies. Loratadine can block histamine production in the body in response to allergens, thus reducing symptoms of allergic reactions.

Uses

Claritin is used to relieve allergy symptoms such as hives, sneezing, nasal congestion and allergic rhinitis. Claritin is prescribed to relieve common allergic conditions such as hay fever, chronic idiopathic urticaria and skin allergies. Claritin is sometimes prescribed to treat the itching associated with Kimura’s disease.
Claritin is available in pill and syrup forms.

Dosage

Claritin is usually prescribed in 10mg doses of oral capsule or tablet form to treat allergies. One tablet is taken per day. Dosage may vary depending on the condition being treated and response to treatment.

It’s important to follow the dosage exactly as the prescribing physician has advised.

Do not take more or less than the prescribed dosage. Taking more of Claritin can worsen the condition and put the patient at risk for serious side effects.

When taking Claritin in the syrup form, use a medical measuring spoon to determine the dosage. Do not use household utensils.

Do not crush or chew Claritin tablets or capsules. Try Claritin chewable tablets if swallowing is difficult.

Claritin should only be taken until the symptoms clear up. This medication is not suitable for continuous long-term use.
