Famvir, known by its generic name famciclovir, is an antiviral drug.

How It Works

Famvir is an antiviral agent that can prevent the spread of viruses in the body. Famvir is most effective against the herpes virus. The medicine can prevent the spread of the virus throughout the body. Famvir does not cure herpes; it can only keep the condition from getting worse.

Uses

Famvir is almost exclusively prescribed to manage herpes infections. This medication may decrease symptoms of herpes such as burning sensations, pain, tingling, tenderness in the affected area and itching. Famvir treatments may also help sores heal and prevent the onset of new sores.

Famvir is used to prevent new outbreaks of herpes virus sores or blisters. It’s very important to note that Famvir does not stop the spread of herpes virus between people. It’s a preventive medication and not a cure.

Famvir is prescribed to treat different types of herpes such as herpes zoster, herpes simplex and genital herpes. The drug is only recommended for treatment in people with uncompromised immune systems.

Dosage

Famvir is available as a tablet that should be swallowed orally. Dosage for the tablet may vary depending on the prescription and medical condition being treated.

It’s normally prescribed to be taken three times a day, or every 8 hours per day, for 7 days straight. Treatment usually begins 3 days after a rash appears on the body.

You can take Famvir tablets with or without food.

Famvir may be given in a single dose when early symptoms of the herpes virus appear.

Follow the dosage instructions just ask your doctor prescribed. Do not increase or decrease the dose without advice.

The treatment of Famvir should be taken continuously for the recommended treatment period. Do not stop taking the medicine abruptly. That may cause the condition to get worse.
