Zovirax
DESCRIPTION

Zovirax is a medication that belongs to the class of antivirals. The active constituent in Zovirax is acyclovir. Zovirax is available as a 200mg tablet.

How It Works

Acyclovir is used to target the viral cells involved in spreading the disease throughout the bodies. One of the ways that these cells are capable of dividing is with the help of an enzyme. This enzyme is called DNA polymerase. Acyclovir, however, enters the viral cells and is activated to inhibit the role of the DNA polymerase. Therefore, the cells are unable to copy themselves, thus preventing them for affecting other portions of the body. This makes it easier for the immune system to deal with the remaining cells.

Uses

The herpes virus is responsible for many different ailments. They can cause genital herpes, chickenpox, cold sores, and shingles. Zovirax can be taken to help with these problems.

Dosage

As Zovirax targets different versions of the herpes virus, the required doses vary from one illness to another. In order to find out which amount is right for you, you will first be required to consult a clinician. Contingent upon the diagnosis, you will be given instructions regarding how much of Zovirax you are expected to take and for how long.

Children who have chickenpox, should be given Zovirax according to their weight. If they are between 2 and 12, and weigh less than 40 kilos, they should be given 20mg per kilo, four times a day. The treatment period is five days. Children who weigh more than 40 kilos can be given an adult dose.

Adults with chickenpox can take 800mg, four times a day. Treatment can proceed for about five days.

To help with herpes zoster, the quantity consumed should be 800mg, about every four hours. This should be equivalent to five doses a day. This should be done for a period of about 7 to 10 days.
For genital herpes the required amount is 200mg taken five times a day. This will be done for about 10 days.
