Augmentin
DESCRIPTION

Augmentin is composed of amoxicillin, a derivative of penicillin, and clavulanate potassium, a beta lactamase inhibitor. It can be ingested as 250mg or 500mg.

How It Works

Cell walls are quite important for continued existence of bacteria. They create support and also help to prevent any unwelcome elements from entering the bacteria. Amoxicillin breaks the bonds that hold the cell walls together. This causes the bacteria to rupture and to be killed. However, many strains of bacteria have grown immune to antibiotics, amoxicillin in particular. Therefore, on its own, amoxicillin may not prove to be especially useful. Clavulanate potassium, however, can prevent this resistant bacteria from being immune to the effects of amoxicillin, allowing it to take effect.

Uses

Augmentin can aid in the treatment of sinusitis, bronchitis, ear infections, UTIs, and even infections present on the skin.

Dosage

Augmentin is available in two different strengths for adults. A clinician will be the best judge in determining which one is more appropriate to your particular condition. Bear in mind that certain existing physical characteristics or medical conditions can also influence how much of Augmentin you may need to take.

In order for Augmentin to fully treat the presenting illness, it will need to be continued for the directed period of time. Failing to do so could cause the bacteria population to simply grow once more.

It has been determined that Augmentin is particularly useful when taken at the start of a meal.

250mg of Augmentin should be taken every eight hours.

500mg of Augmentin should be taken every 12 hours.

You will need to take the precise tablet that has been prescribed to you. For instance, two 250mg Augmentin tablets will not prove to be a sufficient substitute for the 500mg Augmentin pill. This is because they contain differing amounts of key components.

Side Effects

Augmentin can cause certain contradictory symptoms in specific patients. These could consist of:

Hyperventilation
Erratic heartbeat
Difficulty in falling asleep
Rapid, shallow breaths
Unusually dry oral cavity
Increased tension
Tremors
More agitated than usual
Discoloration of the teeth
Difficulty with stay in one place for a long period of time
Presence of welts on the surface of the skin
Itching, especially around the genitals
Experiencing pain during sexual intercourse
Rash
Thick vaginal discharge

If you feel as though any of these issues are particularly prominent or aggressive, you should get the opinion of a clinician.

Precautions

Augmentin should be not prescribed to those with the subsequent issues:

Allergy to amoxicillin or clavulanate potassium
Allergy to other penicillin medications
Liver problems due to Augmentin

Prior to being recommended Augmentin, you should tell your medical expert about:

Mononucleosis
Any problems of the liver
Compromised kidneys
Hypersensitivity to treatments containing cephalosporin

Augmentin has been known to make hormonal forms of birth control less effectual. This could increase the propensity for pregnancy so you should opt for other methods.

Self-Care

Augmentin could potentially harm a nursing baby as it is possible for it to be passed down through breast milk.

It is not definite whether Augmentin could harm a child in utero.
