Tofranil
DESCRIPTION

Tofranil is a brand name for imipramine, a drug most commonly used to treat depression and nerve pain.

How It Works

Tofranil is a tricyclic antidepressant. These antidepressants are chemically different from SSRIs, the most commonly prescribed type of antidepressant today. Tofranil works by making neurotransmitters such as serotonin more available for use in the brain. This action is known to lead to improved effects of psychiatric disorders such as depression and anxiety. Tofranil may also block a substance in the body called acetylcholine, which is known to play a part in bedwetting.

Uses

Tofranil is most commonly prescribed to treat depression. It may also be used to treat enuresis, or nighttime bedwetting, in children. Taking Tofranil for depression may improve your mood, help you sleep and eat better, get your energy levels back up and overall make you feel better.

Dosage

Your doctor will prescribe you the correct amount of Tofranil based on the severity of your condition, response to treatment, and prior medical history.

You must take Tofranil exactly as your doctor tells you to take it. Do not take this drug in higher or lower doses than instructed. You must continue the treatment as long as instructed to keep depression at bay.

Read the patient information leaflet provided with the packaging before taking your first dose.

Tofranil is usually prescribed to be taken one to four times per day. You must take this medication by mouth. Swallow pills whole with a glass of water if needed.

You can take Tofranil with or without food.

If you only need to take one dose of Tofranil per day, take the dose close to bedtime. This will prevent any possible daytime sleepiness.

When giving Tofranil to a child for bedwetting, give each dose one hour before bedtime. For children who wet the bed soon after going to sleep early in the night, the drug may be needed to be administered earlier in the day in several separate doses. Ask the pediatrician to explain the instructions clearly so you understand.

Take Tofranil as instructed even if you don’t immediately feel well after starting your treatment program. It may take days or weeks for you to feel the benefits.
