Inderal
DESCRIPTION

Inderal is a brand name for propranolol, a drug that is frequently prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

How It Works

Propranolol, the main active ingredient in Inderal, is a beta blocker. It can block or inhibit the activity of epinephrine (adrenaline) and norepinephrine in the body. This results in the heart beating at a more relaxed rate, so there’s less strain on the muscles. Propranolol’s mechanism of action can also relieve elevated blood pressure.

Uses

Inderal is usually prescribed to treat high blood pressure (hypertension), uneven heartbeat (atrial fibrillation), and chest pain (angina). Sometimes this medication is used to treat infantile hemangioma in babies. Some patients may use Inderal to prevent the onset of migraine headaches. Inderal may be prescribed for conditions other than the ones mentioned above.

Dosage

Dosage of Inderal will vary depending on various factors. Your doctor will prescribe you the correct dosage based on your unique medical history.

You must take Inderal exactly as your doctor prescribes for the treatment to be effective. Do not take this drug in larger or smaller doses than prescribed.

Inderal can be taken with or without food. However, take each dose the same way. Take your doses the same time each day as well to keep a consistent amount of the drug in your body.

Swallow the pills whole. Do not open, split, crush or otherwise break the extended-release tablets.

You may be required to check blood pressure while taking Inderal.

Do not stop taking Inderal suddenly. It will make your condition worse.

Side Effects

Taking Inderal may result in the following side effects:

Vomiting
Nausea
Diarrhea
Stomach cramps
Constipation
Sleep problems (insomnia)
Tired feeling
Impotence or difficulty having an orgasm
Decreased sex drive

Tell your doctor if side effects get worse. Side effects should disappear after a while. If not, consult with your doctor immediately.

Precautions

Do not take Inderal if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the drug. If you are allergic to beta blockers similar to Inderal, you may be allergic to Inderal as well.

Inderal should not be used if you have very slow heartbeats, a serious heart condition (such as AV block, suck sinus syndrome), or asthma.

Some medical conditions may make Inderal unsafe to use. Tell your doctor if you have diabetes, low blood sugar, muscle disorders, breathing disorders like bronchitis or emphysema, congestive heart failure, low blood pressure, depression, disease of the liver or kidney, a thyroid disorder, adrenal gland tumor, or blood circulation disorders.

It’s not recommended to take Inderal when pregnant. Inderal can harm a baby through breast milk, so do not take this drug if you are breastfeeding.

Self-Care

Take Inderal regularly for the treatment to work. If you are taking this drug for hypertension, you may feel well and not experience any symptoms. But do not stop using Inderal until you are told to.

Inderal is not a “cure” for hypertension. The drug will only be a part of a program with diet and exercise to manage high blood pressure. It’s important to follow the prescribed program completely to improve your health.
