Vasotec
DESCRIPTION

Vasotec is a brand name for Enalapril, a medication mainly prescribed to treat high blood pressure.

How It Works

Vasotec is an ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) inhibitor. This drug can block a substance produced by the body that causes blood vessels to naturally narrow. When Vasotec is taken, this narrowing never occurs, so the blood vessels are more relaxed and blood flows at a lower pressure.

Uses

Vasotec is mainly prescribed to treat high blood pressure. It may also be prescribed to treat diabetic kidney disease and heart failure. High blood pressure medications such as Vasotec are used to reduce the risk of heart attack, stroke and kidney failure caused by hypertension.

Dosage

Dosage of Vasotec varies from patient to patient. Your doctor will prescribe you the correct dosage.

You must follow all prescription instructions your doctor gives you when taking this medication. Do not alter the dosage or discontinue using without telling your doctor. Refer to the patient information leaflet provided with the package for more information.

Vasotec should be taken by the mouth. You can take this drug with or without food, unless your doctor tells you one way to take it. Vasotec is usually prescribed to be taken once or twice daily.

Use a precise medical measuring spoon to take dosage when you are taking the oral suspension of this medication. Household spoons will not help you get the correct dose of liquid Vasotec.

Take Vasotec the same time each day to help you avoid missing a dose.

Continue to take this medication even if you begin to feel better. If you are taking Vasotec for hypertension, you may not feel sick at all.

Vasotec may not be immediately effective and may take several weeks up to several months to treat the condition. Therefore, it’s very important to take this medication regularly according to recommendations.

Side Effects

Vasotec may cause one or more of the following side effects:

Dizziness
Lightheadedness
Weakness
Dry cough

Side effects other than the ones mentioned above may occur. Side effects may be different depending on why you have been prescribed Vasotec.

Side effects are usually not serious. However, if you cannot bear the side effects, or if they do not go away, immediately call your doctor.

Precautions

Do not take Vasotec if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the drug. If you are allergic to other ACE inhibitors, you may be likely allergic to Vasotec as well.

Tell your doctor if you have a history of angioedema (an allergic reaction which causes swelling in the face, lips, tongue or throat), high level of potassium in the blood, or if you have undergone a blood filtering process like dialysis.

Taking Vasotec may cause your blood potassium levels to spike. Avoid taking potassium or salt substitutes when taking this medication to stay safe.

Some side effects of Vasotec may cause dehydration. Therefore, drink plenty of fluids to stay well hydrated when taking Vasotec.

Self-Care

If taking Vasotec makes you feel dizzy, you should not engage in potentially dangerous activities that require alertness, such as driving or operating heavy machines.

It’s strongly advised to limit or ideally stop taking alcoholic beverages when using this drug.
