Cialis
DESCRIPTION

Cialis is a vasodilator medication approved to treat erectile dysfunction in men.

How It Works

The main active ingredient in Cialis is tadalafil, a vasodilator belonging to a class of drugs known as PDE5 inhibitors. Tadalafil can dilate blood vessels in the genital area; this increases blood flow to the penile region. As a result, a man can achieve an erection easily. Cialis works similarly to ingredients in other erectile dysfunction drugs, Viagra and Levitra. The difference is Cialis can last longer up to about 17 hours, as opposed to 4 to 5 hours for the former two.

Uses

Cialis is mainly prescribed to treat erectile dysfunction in men. In 2011, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved Cialis as a medication to treat benign prostatic hyperplasia. Cialis does not “cure” either of these conditions. Rather, the medication is used to manage symptoms. When Cialis is prescribed for erectile dysfunction, the drug can only assist in achieving an erection. The drug does not cause an erection; a sexual stimulant and the state of arousal must be present to achieve the results.

Dosage

The starting dose of Cialis for erectile dysfunction is 10mg. The drug may be decreased to 5mg or 20mg depending on the response to the treatment. The dosage may vary depending on physician’s recommendation. The dosage for benign prostatic hyperplasia will depend on the doctor’s recommendation.

Cialis can be taken with or without food. Take your daily dose the same time each day.

For erectile dysfunction, take Cialis tablet at least 30 minutes before commencing sexual activity. Cialis is effective 36 hours after taking the drug. An erection will only occur if there’s some form of sexual stimulant.

Cialis should be taken only once per day. If you miss a dose, take it soon as you remember. However, do not take more than one dose of Cialis within 24 hours.

Take Cialis exactly as your doctor prescribes it. Do not change the dose without your doctor’s advice.

Side Effects

Common side effects of Cialis include:

 Headache
 Indigestion
 Back pain
 Muscle aches
 Flushing
 Stuffy or runny nose

The above side effects should go away after a few hours. Call your doctor if the side effects persist or gets worse.

Precautions

Do not take Cialis if you suspect you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the drug.

You should not take Cialis if you have certain preexisting medical conditions such as angina, heart disease, pulmonary hypertension, low blood pressure, liver problems, retinitis pigmentosa, kidney problems, bleeding problems among others. Ask your doctor if your medical history allows you to take Cialis safely.

Do not take Cialis if you are taking other medications containing nitrates.

Self-Care

Do not consume alcohol too much when taking Cialis. It’s recommended not to consume more than 5 glasses of wine or 5 shots of whiskey when taking this drug. Alcohol can exacerbate certain side effects of the drug, so it’s best to avoid drinking at all.

Cialis will not protect you or your partner from sexually transmitted diseases. You must take separate protective measures to reduce the risk of contracting an STD.
