Bentyl
DESCRIPTION

Bentyl is a medication prescribed to treat a specific intestinal problem known as irritable bowel syndrome. It is not safe to use this medication among children below the age of six months due to potential side effects.

How it works

Bentyl belongs to a class of drugs known as antispasmodics. These drugs work by slowing down the natural movements of the gut. They also work by relaxing the muscles in the stomach and intestines.

Uses

Bentyl is mainly used to treat irritable bowel syndrome. It is also useful in decreasing the symptoms of intestinal and stomach cramping.

Dosage

Bentyl must be taken four times a day, by mouth. The drug is generally consumed before the three meals and at bed time. However, your physician might prescribe you a different dose schedule that suits your condition. In this case, follow the prescription provided by your physician closely. You must not increase or decrease your dosage without consulting your physician.

If you are consuming Bentyl in liquid form, make sure to use a proper measuring device. Do not use a household spoon as it can lead to the incorrect dosage. Before taking the liquid, mix it with an equal amount of water.

Anti-acids affect the absorption of this medication negatively. Therefore, do not take this medication along with antacids. If you are consuming the latter, take it after meals while taking Bentyl before your meals.

The dosage will be determined by a doctor according to your age, condition and treatment response. You must not increase the dosage without speaking to your physician. Doing so will not enhance the effectiveness of the medication. It will only make you more susceptible to the side effects.

You may experience withdrawal symptoms if you stop using this medication abruptly. In order to avoid withdrawal symptoms such as dizziness, sweating and vomiting, make sure to reduce your dose gradually.
