Reglan
DESCRIPTION

Reglan is used to treat certain stomach and intestinal conditions. This medication is also referred to as Metoclopramide.

How it works

Reglan works by blocking a natural chemical in the body, a neurotransmitter known as dopamine. It works by increasing the speed of stomach emptying and movement of the intestines.

Uses

Reglan is useful in treating certain stomach and intestinal problems. It is used as a short-term treatment for heartburn, most often as a last resort. Reglan is also used by individuals with diabetes who have poor emptying of their stomachs. Moreover, this drug is useful in preventing nausea and vomiting that occurs as a result of chemotherapy or radiation treatment for cancer.

Dosage

Reglan is generally consumed four times a day on a daily basis. The drug is taken by mouth, 30 minutes before each meal and before bedtime. However, your physician might prescribe you a different dosage to suit your own medical condition.

If you are consuming this medication in the liquid form, make sure to use a medical measuring spoon. Using a regular household spoon can lead to the wrong diagnosis. The dosage will be determined by your healthcare provider according to medical condition, weight and treatment response.

Due to the risk of tardive dyskinesia, this medication must not be consumed in high doses or for longer than recommended. This medication must be taken as regularly as possible in order to experience its best benefits. Therefore, do not skip or miss your doses under any circumstance.

If you stop the consumption of Reglan abruptly, you can experience unpleasant withdrawal symptoms. Therefore, it is important to reduce your doses gradually. If your condition worsens or persists during the treatment period, inform your physician immediately.

Side effects

When consuming Reglan, you are likely to experience a number of unpleasant side effects such as trouble sleeping, agitation, tiredness, drowsiness, dizziness, headaches and diarrhea. Even though these conditions do not persist for long, make sure to inform your physician if they worsen with time.

During the treatment period, you might also experience some severe side effects such as:

Mood changes
Abnormal milk production
Uncontrollable muscle movements
Enlarged breasts
Swelling of feet/hands
Changes in menstruation among women
Inability to keep still

If you do experience any of the above, do not hesitate to alert your healthcare provider.

Inform your doctor if you are allergic to Reglan or if you have any other allergies.
Brief your physician about your medical history, especially if you suffered from liver or kidney problems in the past.
This medication can make you dizzy or drowsy. Therefore, it is recommended to stay away from any activity that requires you to be alert.

Self-care

It is possible for you to continue the treatment even if you get pregnant. However, you need to be careful with the dosage. Do not use Reglan more than required.
