DESCRIPTION

This medication is mainly used to treat mild to moderate pain that occurs due to various conditions. It must be noted that this medication is only used for short-term treatments. The drug is also known as Mefenamic acid.

How it works

This medication belongs to a group of medications known as Non-Steroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs (NSAIDs). These medications work by reducing the inflammation in the body.

Uses

Ponstel is primarily useful in short-term treatments to treat pain that occurs as a result of various conditions. It is effective in reducing pain and blood loss which occur during menstruation. Ponstel can also be used to treat gout attacks.

Dosage

The dosage will be determined by a physician according to your medical condition and the way you respond to the treatment.

This medication must be taken on a daily basis, 4 times a day, along with a full glass of water. Once you take this drug, you must not lie down for at least 10 minutes. If you experience stomach upset, then you can consume this medication with food or milk.

Do not consume this drug along with anti-acids unless your physician says it is fine. Anti-acids can affect the way Ponstel is absorbed by the body. Therefore, it is best to take these medications at two different schedules.

When taking this medication, it is important to closely follow the prescription at all times. Do not increase your dosage without consulting your physician. This can make you more susceptible towards certain side effects. It can lead to an overdose as well. You must not take this medication for longer than necessary either. It is not recommended to consume this drug for more than a week. Therefore, do not continue to consume this drug for more than 2 consecutive days unless your physician advises you to do otherwise.

Side effects

Upset stomach
Diarrhea
Nausea
Heartburn
Dizziness
Drowsiness
Headaches

If these conditions persist or worsen, make sure to contact your physician immediately.

This medication can also increase your blood pressure to a significant degree. Therefore, take regular tests.

It is also possible for you to experience allergic reactions such as trouble breathing, rashes, hives, swelling and severe dizziness. In this case, get medical help as soon as possible.

Precautions

The following are some precautionary methods which you need to follow during the course of the treatment.

Make sure that you are not allergic to any of the ingredients used in this medication.
Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration.
If you are getting a surgery, inform your surgeon that you are using this drug.
Avoid the consumption of alcohol.
Do no drive or operate machinery as this drug can make you drowsy.
Avoid sun exposure since this medication can make you more sensitive to the sun.

Self-care

If you are planning to become pregnant or accidently become pregnant during the course of the treatment, inform your doctor immediately. Although it is possible to use this medication during the period of pregnancy, the drug must be avoided during the first trimester and last trimester.

This drug can not only pass on through breast milk, but it can have undesirable effects on your child too.
