Actonel
DESCRIPTION

Generically known as Risedronate, Actonel falls under the medicine class known as ‘Bisphosphonates’. It can be used in preventing and treating Osteoporosis conditions (types of bone loss) in your body.

How it works

Osteoporosis has become a common condition among many adults in recent times. As a result of this, bones might become thinner and break more easily. This condition is known to increase when people are aging. Also if you have been using corticosteroid medicines for a long time or if it is after menopause, the risk of getting osteoporosis may become high. Risedronate slows down the bone loss process; increases bone mass and in doing so reduce the risk of broken (fractured) bones.

Uses

With the help of Actonel, you will be able to reduce the risks that might be involved from certain osteoporosis conditions and keep performing your daily tasks in a more efficient manner.

Dosage

By reading and properly following the medication guide and the patient information leaflet given by your pharmacist, you will be able to avoid the risk of causing harm to your esophagus and absorb as much of the medicine as possible. It should be taken usually once a day, ideally when you are waking up in the morning.

This is because it should be consumed before taking any beverage, food or any other medication. It is important that you do not take the medication while still in bed or at bedtime. Use the medication only with a full glass of plain water and make sure not to take it with any other beverage.

Swallow the tablet whole without chewing or sucking on it and any other food or beverages should only be consumed after 30 minutes of taking Risedronate. This includes the likes of dairy products, calcium enriched juices and certain vitamins that might cause an interference with the absorption of this medicine to the body.

Side effects

On rare situations the use of Risedronate might cause stomach upsets and ulcers, irritations in your esophagus. And although severe side effects are rare for this medication the following issues might still occur.

Severe muscle/joint/bone pains
Unusual pain in hip/groin/thigh
Problems in vision
Pain in jaw
Serious allergic reactions (swelling, itching, rash, etc.)
Black, tarry looking stools
Abdominal/ stomach pain

Precautions

Before using Actonel, tell your health care provider if you are allergic to Risedronate, or any other inactive ingredients included in it. He/she should know about any other allergies that you might have as well. If issues such as esophagus problems, stomach/intestinal disorders, low blood calcium levels or serious kidney disease, are there in your medical history, make sure to inform about them as well. As there is a risk of jawbone problems occurring when using this medication, you will need to do a checkup of your mouth before using it. Get the proper advice from a dentist in order to keep your teeth in good condition.

Self-care

If you are planning on having some sort of surgery done your physician should be notified about the medication (prescribed/non-prescribed) that you are using. Sometimes you may be advised to stop using Actonel before a surgery. Also since the effects of this drug is untested on unborn babies and infants, talk with your doctor before using it, if you are pregnant or currently breast-feeding.
