Keppra is a brand name for Levetiracetam. It is an anticonvulsant used in the treatment of seizures.

How it works

Keppra is an anticonvulsant. It can decrease the activity in the brain that leads to seizures.

Uses

Keppra is typically prescribed to manage epilepsy and seizures. It may also be prescribed to treat bipolar disorder, borderline personality disorder and similar mood disorders. Anticonvulsants like Keppra are sometimes prescribed to treat neuropathic pain. Keppra is available as immediate release and extended release tablets or oral suspension (liquid solution).

Dosage

Dosage of Keppra will vary depending on the severity of your condition and other medical factors. Your doctor will determine the right dosage for you to take.

Take Keppra exactly as your doctor prescribes it to you. Do not take this drug in any other dose than what the doctor prescribes.

Keppra is typically prescribed to be taken twice a day, once in the morning and once in the night. You can take Keppra with or without food.

Take Keppra the same time each day to help you remember the dosing schedule.

Swallow Keppra pills whole without crushing, splitting or chewing the tablets. You can take the pills with some liquid if preferred.

Measure the liquid Keppra by using a medical measuring spoon, a syringe, a measuring cup or a dropper. Do not use household utensils as it will not give you an exact measurement.

Take Keppra for as long as your doctor recommends. Do not abruptly stop treatment without medical advice. If you want to stop taking this medication for any reason, talk to your doctor first.

Side effects

Keppra may cause any of the following side effects:

Confusion
Headache
Loss of appetite
Weakness
Unsteady walking
Loss of balance or coordination
Diarrhea
Vomiting
Constipation
Joint pain
Neck pain
Double vision
Excessive sleepiness

Some side effects may be severe than others. Tell your doctor immediately if you experience worse seizers than before.

Precautions

Do not take Keppra if you are allergic to any of the ingredients in the medication.

Some medications, vitamins, herbal supplements, and nutritional products may negatively interact with Keppra. Therefore, you should disclose all these to your doctor before taking this medication.

Inform your doctor if you have a history of or an ongoing case of any of these conditions: depression, mood problems, suicidal tendencies or thoughts, or kidney disease.

You should not breastfeed while taking Keppra. Tell your doctor if you get pregnant or planning to become pregnant when taking this drug.

Anticonvulsants have been shown to cause suicidal tendencies in a small number of adults and children in clinical studies. Keppra may cause changes to your mood and possible cause suicidal thoughts or behaviors. You must immediately call your doctor or seek mental health care if you feel suicidal or want to harm yourself.

Self-care

Keppra does not cure epilepsy. You must take this medication continuously for it to be effective. Tell your doctor if you think you want to stop this medication, but do not stop unless your doctor recommends it.

If Keppra causes drowsiness as a side effect, do not drive or operate heavy machinery.

Do not share this medication with anyone else.
