Risperdal
DESCRIPTION

Risperdal is an atypical anti-psychotic drug which is available in the form of tablets and an injection. Risperdal tablets have varying strengths of 0.25 mg, 0.5 mg, 1 mg, 2 mg, 3 mg and 4 mg.

How It Works

The mechanism of Risperdal is associated with receptor antagonisms of the neurotransmitters serotonin and dopamine. It rebalances these neurotransmitters which are responsible for carrying messages from one cell to another in the brain to improve mental functions. In addition, Dopamine and Serotonin help to maintain mood and behavior. Mental illness is understood to be caused due to disturbances prevalent in the functions of neurotransmitters. For instance, illnesses like schizophrenia is caused by the increased activity of Dopamine. Risperdal works by obstructing receptors that dopamine works on, thus, preventing the over-activity of this neurotransmitter and governing schizophrenic conditions.
