Urispas
DESCRIPTION

Urispas is a brand name of a generic drug called Flavoxate. It belongs to the group of antispasmodic drugs. Each tablet consists of 100 mg of flavoxate hydrochloride.

How It Works

The active ingredient flavoxate hydrochloride is a muscle relaxer. Urispas works by easing the muscles in the wall of the bladder. Sometimes, when these muscles contract it can cause intense spasms which in turn causes you to pass urine very often than normal. It can also lead to painful urination, involuntary passing of urine and inflammation in the urinary tract. By relaxing bladder walls, this medication is able to regulate muscle contractions and lessen spasms.

Uses

Urispas relieves pain during urination, lessens the number of times and urgency of the need to pass urine and stops urinary incontinence. These symptoms usually show up after the use of a catheter.

Dosage

The usual dose for adults and children above 12 years of age is 200 mg 3 or 4 times per day. The dose can be decreased with signs of improvement in the passing of urine.

This medication is not suitable for infants and children below 12 years of age.

It important to follow the exact instructions of your doctor when taking Urispas. If you miss a dose, it is not recommend to take a double dose. At such an instance, continue with the next dose as usual or consult your pharmacist for advice.

Urispas may be taken with or without meals.

Side Effects

Some possible side effects of this medication are:

Drowsiness
Headache
Anxiety
Nausea
Indigestion
Diarrhea
Dry mouth
Difficulty in swallowing
Blurred vision
Irregular heart beat
Skin rashes
Fever
Fluctuation in the number of white blood cells
Allergic reactions may cause swelling in the lips, tongue or throat.

Note that some minor Urispas side effects do not necessarily need medical attention. Many of the side effects will wane over time. However, if any side effect is bothersome to you, do not hesitate to contact your doctor and get advice on how to manage it.

Precautions

This medication must be used with caution if:

You are pregnant, breast feeding or planning to become pregnant
You are taking any other drugs or supplements
You have an enlarged prostrate
You suffer from a condition called Glaucoma

Urispas is not to be used by persons with the following medical complications:

Obstruction in the bowels
Bleeding intestines
Achalasia: difficulty in swallowing due to the constriction of the food pipe
Obstruction in the urinary tract
Rectal bleeding
Lactose intolerance
Allergy to ingredients found in Urispas

When taking Urispas, avoid consuming alcohol and taking anti-depressant drugs. There is a possibility for this medication to react adversely with such products.

Avoid staying exposed to intense sunlight or heat of any form. If your body gets heated while taking Urispas, it can lead to a heat stroke.

During pregnancy, this drug should be taken with care. Talk to your doctor and be aware of the possible risks to the health of your baby.

Self-Care

Urispas is known to cause dizziness and drowsiness. Be mindful when working with machinery and avoid driving while you are on this medication.
