Bactroban
DESCRIPTION

Bactroban (Generic: Mupirocin) is an antibiotic which prevents the growth of bacteria on your skin. It comes as a cream which can be used on the skin and as an ointment that can be used for nasal use as well.

How It Works

Bactroban’s active ingredient mupirocin acts as an antibacterial medicine. It affects the bacteria’s protein production which leads the bacteria to produce faulty, abnormal proteins. This results in killing the bacteria and ultimately clears the infection. Skin infections like Impetigo, infected hair follicles or boils can be treated with this medication. The cream or ointment should be used for the full time prescribed by your doctor and the symptoms might improve even before the infection is completely healed.

Uses

The proper usage of Bactroban cream or ointment will result in signs of improvement within 3 to 5 days. Eyes, mouth and lips should be avoided when applying this. If they do get in wash the affected area well with water.

Dosage

Bactroban cream or ointment should be applied in small amounts using a cotton swab or gauze pad as directed. This should only be done after cleaning and drying the infected skin area and avoid spreading it over a large area of the skin. Make sure to wash your hands properly both before and after using it. The medication should be used 3 times per day for 10 days. The symptoms will improve within 3 to 5 days, but if it does not improve or if the condition worsens get advice from your doctor promptly.

You should get emergency medical attention if the following symptoms are shown:

Allergic reactions: Hives; difficult breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat.
Severe stomach pain, diarrhea that is watery or bloody

Any signs of a new skin infection

More common side effects may include:

Rash

This is not a complete list of side effects and if any of these or any others may occur, you should contact your doctor immediately.

Precautions

If there is a risk that mupirocin or any other ingredients of Bactroban, might cause an allergic reaction in your system refrain from using. It would be best to take advice from a pharmacist/doctor before using it. In the case of getting any severe reactions, due to allergies caused by the applied medication, you should stop using it and alert your health care provider at once. It is very important that you avoid using this on a child, if any proper medical advice does not dictate it. Refrain from using the cream on children who are younger than 3 month old. For children who are as young as 2 months old, the ointment can be used.

Self-Care

If you are planning to get pregnant, currently pregnant or breastfeeding an infant, proper medical advice is recommended before using Bactroban. This is due to the fact that this medicine’s safety has not been established during pregnancy. According to the manufacturer, use the medication only when the mother benefits more from it than the potential risks to the unborn/developing baby.
