Lunesta
DESCRIPTION

Lunesta is a medication mainly used to treat several sleeping problems. It is more commonly known as sleep medicine. Its generic name is Eszopiclone.

How it works

This is called a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic. It is a common sedative. It belongs to a class of drugs called the cyclopyrrolones.

Lunesta is mainly used in the treatment of insomnia where you find it difficult to fall asleep.

The most important chemical that is involved in sleep inducing is GABA (gamma-aminobutyric acid). The process involved is not clear, but lunesta induces sleep by interacting with GABA receptiors in your body.

Uses

Lunesta being a sedative, is widely and most commonly used to treat insomnia. It works with the chemicals in your brain that cause sleep problems, and therefore, treats insomnia.

This medication helps you relax and eventually, fall asleep.

Dosage

It’s recommended to use the lowest possible dosage at all times.

The advised starting dosage in adults is 1 mg. This dosing can be raised to either 2 mg or 3 mg if clinically indicated, once daily.

The dosage should not exceed 3 mg.

For geriatric or debilitated patients, the total dose should not exceed 2 mg.

Side effects

You might sometimes feel sleepy during the day, consult your doctor if so.

Some of the common side effects are;

Dry mouth
Unpleasant taste
Dizziness
Difficulty in coordination
Fever or chills
Painful urination
Cough

Some of the less common side effects may be;

Bloody urine
Confusion
Feeling sad
Lack of appetite
Fear and nervousness
Trouble concentrating
Cold flu symptoms
Irritability
Bladder pain

In some rare situations it has been noted that loss of memory or problems with memory might occur, if so discontinue use and consult your doctor immediately.

Precautions

Inform your doctor if you have any allergies. Let them know if you are allergic to eszopiclone or zopiclone. This product might contain active ingredients that could result in allergic reactions or other similar problems.

Document all the current medication you are on and inform your doctor.

Let your doctor know about your medical history, such as;

Kidney disease
Liver disease
Breathing problems
Mental problems
Mood changes
Abuse of drugs and alcohol (both family and personal history)
History of sleepwalking
Muscle diseases

Before having surgery, let your doctor know about all the products and medication you are on. Including prescription drugs and herbal products. This leaves no room for any problems.

Lunesta can cause problems to your reactions or thought streaks. You might feel drowsy even after waking up. Until you know for sure how you react to the medicine or get used to it, avoid driving and using machinery.

You might display withdrawal symptoms when you stop taking this, so consult your doctor and gradually decrease the dosage until you have completely gotten over this medication.

Self-care

This product is to be administered only if absolutely necessary during pregnancy. Discuss the several risks and benefits with your doctor.

It is known known whether this dug could pass onto breast milk, however similar drugs do tend to pass onto breast milk so once again, seek the advice of your doctor.
