DESCRIPTION

Sominex tablets are tablets that are used to aid sleep for temporary relief.

How it works

Sominex is a diphenhydramine-based sleep aid. Diphenhydramine hydrochloride is an antihistamine drug, which has sedative effects. It reduces the effects of natural chemical histamine in the body.

One single oral dose of this medication is quickly absorbed, with maximum activity occurring within an hour. This chemical is widely distributed around your body.

Promethazine is present in Sominez, this is a neuroleptic drug that has very strong sedative and weak antipsychotic effects. This medication is also used to reduce nervousness and agitation.

Uses

These tablets contain promethazine, which is a sedating antihistamine. This medication helps you relax so that you’ll eventually fall asleep.

Dosage

The usual adult dosage for insomnia is 25 to 50 mg orally, before bedtime.

The usual pediatric dose for kids above the age of 12 years is 25 mg to 50 mg orally, at bedtime.

The dosage depends on individuals, so consult your doctor on the dosage and how it’s to be administered.

The tablet has to be taken with water, either with or without food. Do not use this medication longer than seven days without seeking medical attention.

Side effects

Each individual tends to react to medication in different ways. Listed below are few of the side effects one might experience;

Dizziness and extreme drowsiness
Headaches
Restlessness and agitation
Tiredness
Blurred vision
Confusion
Loss of appetite
Low blood pressure
Sudden awareness of your heartbeat
Sensitivity of the skin to the sun
Yellowing of the skin

However, you may not experience any of the above side effects.

If you have severe allergic reactions after administering this medication, it’s advised that you either discontinue use or consult your doctor/pharmacist immediately. This product may contain active ingredients that cause allergic reactions and other similar problems.

Precautions

This drug may cause severe drowsiness that can last up to 12 hours, therefore, don’t take it if you are to do any activity that requires alertness or operating machinery. You should avoid having alcohol while you are on this medication.

This drug will also interfere with some pregnancy tests, and can cause faulty results from appearing.

Children under 16 years of age are not advised to take this medication.

People who have taken medication called monoamine oxidase inhibitors during the past 2 weeks are also not advised to take sominex tablets.

People with hereditary lactose intolerance and glucose-galactose malabsorption are also not advised to take this medication.

Individuals with the following are advised to get medical advice before administering this tablet;

People with kidney problems, liver problems, asthma, bronchitis, bronchiectasis
People with severe heart diseases
People with epilepsy
People with a blocked drainage of urine

Self-care

You are not advised to take Sominex tablets while you are pregnant, without consulting your doctor first. It’s not recommended unless it is of absolute necessity.

Small amount of this drug may pass onto breast milk, this is however, not expected to be harmful to a nursing infant. Seek medical advice beforehand.
