Unisom
DESCRIPTION

This drug is used to treat occasional sleepiness and reduce the difficulty when one is trying to fall asleep. The generic name for Unisom is Doxylamine.

How it works

Doxylamine is an antihistamine. Antihistamines are drugs that oppose the activity of histamine receptors in your body.

Doxylamine works by depressing your central nervous system to produce drowsiness. The brain cells that are concerned with wakefulness are the ones that tend to release histamine, so by blocking the activity of histamine receptors, the drug makes you feel sleepy. Histamine is a neurotransmitter in the brain.
