Arimidex
DESCRIPTION

Arimidex is a non-steroidal drug used to treat breast cancer. Arimidex is available for oral administration in the strength of 1 mg. Anastrozole is the active ingredient in this drug and it is an aromatase inhibitor.

How it works

As an aromatase inhibitor, this drug can prevent the activity of an enzyme called aromatase which is responsible for the biosynthesis of estrogen. Estrogen is produced mainly through this enzyme in women who have reached the menopausal stage. In women who have passed this stage, sex hormones which are produced by ovaries as well as testosterone are converted into estrogen. Arimidex works by obstructing this process which is activated by the aromatase enzyme. As a result, estrogen levels are lowered in your body.

Hormone receptor positive cancers like breast cancer depend on estrogen to develop. When this hormone is conjoined to its respective receptors, it enables cancer cells to grow. Arimidex can prevent this from happening by interfering with the production of estrogen.

Uses

Arimidex is prescribed to cure breast cancer in post-menopausal women.
