Aygestin
DESCRIPTION

Aygestin is the brand name of the generic drug Norethisterone. It is a man- made type of the female sex hormone progesterone and is used to treat various menstrual and uterine disorders.

How it works

The hormone progesterone plays a vital role in pregnancy. Progesterone is released by your body during a certain time in the menstrual cycle and it helps in maintaining the linings of the womb. At the absence of a fertilized egg in the womb lining, the level of progesterone in the body reduces at the end of the menstrual cycle. It causes the womb lining to be shredded and initiates menstrual bleeding. On the other hand, if a fertilized egg is attached to the womb, progesterone levels increase to maintain healthy pregnancy.

Aygestin works as a hormone replace therapy by resembling progesterone and performing its functions the same way. It stops the normal growth of womb linings and indicates hormone changes to maintain a proper menstrual cycle.
