Danazol
DESCRIPTION

Danazol is a generic drug and a synthetic steroid. It resembles the sex hormone Androgen and is primarily known to treat endometriosis. This drug is available in strengths of 50 mg, 100 mg and 200 mg.

How it works

The pituitary gland in the brain is responsible for regulating hormones in the body. Danazol affects the pituitary gland by blocking the production of gonadotrophin hormones. The function of this hormone is to initiate the production of sex hormones such as estrogen and progesterone that are related to reproduction processes. Danazol works by reducing the production of sex hormones to treat disorders caused by them.

Endometriosis is a condition in which linings that ideally form inside of the womb are formed around organs outside it. Sex hormones are accountable for endometriotic tissue formation. By controlling sex hormones Danazol is able to prevent this condition. Sex hormones also act on breast tissues. Thus, Danazol can even prevent tenderness in breasts.

Uses

Aside from treating endometriosis and pain in breasts, Danazol is also prescribed for patients with Fibrocystic Breast Disease and a disease called hereditary angioedema.

Dosage

Danazol pills have to be swallowed whole with a full glass of water. The dose can be taken before, after or without meals as you prefer.

Usually, the treatment is initiated on the first day of menstruation. Follow the instructions of your doctor when using this drug.

Adults with endometriosis are recommended a dose of 100 mg or 200 mg which is to be taken twice a day. This dose should be continued for 3 to 6 months. Do not terminate the use of this drug without your doctor’s advice.

Adults suffering from Fibrocystic Breast Disease are recommended a dose of 50 mg to 200 mg twice a day. This drug may need a couple of months (1 to 3) to cure this condition. Symptoms may resurface again in some patients after one year. If so, treatment has to be reinitiated.

The adult dose for Angioedema is 200 mg to be taken two or three times per day. It is necessary to reduce the dosage within 3 months after starting this drug.
