Prometrium
DESCRIPTION

Prometrium is a neurosteroid and acts similar to the naturally occurring hormone in the female reproductive system called Progesterone. It is therefore used as a hormone replacement therapy and is available in varying strengths.

How it works

The hormone Progesterone is produced by ovaries in the corpus luteum. It has a number of functions in your body. It is primarily responsible for maintaining the inner lining of the uterus. When a fertilized egg is formed, it is the activity of progesterone that enables the uterus to accept the egg. The drug Prometrium works as a synthetic steroid to replace Progesterone when it is not produced enough in your body. This medication restores menstruation and pregnancy in women with problems in their reproductive system.

Uses

By replacing Progesterone in the body, Prometrium is able to treat menopause. It is used with a combination of estrogen replacements to ensure the restoration of menstruation in women who lack progesterone in their body. It is also given to transgender women as a hormone replacement therapy.

Dosage

The usual dose of Prometrium is 200 mg which is to be taken once daily for 2 weeks with estrogen replacement. If you have been recommended to take a high dose of estrogen, it is necessary that you take 300 mg of Prometrium daily in divided doses. You can take 200 mg at night before bed time and 100 mg the next morning after breakfast.

If you are required to administer a dose different to this, do not change that dose. This drug is prescribed by considering age, weight and other conditions of your body. Therefore, your doctor will prescribe the correct dose for you.

If you a miss a dose, here is what you should do. If you are taking 200 mg daily (100 mg capsules x 2), an additional dose of 100 mg can be taken the next morning. But, if you are taking 300 mg per day, do not take a double dose to make up for the one you missed. Instead, continue with the next dose as usual.

Store this drug at room temperature away from direct sunlight.
